The gear that lives above the desk
A boom arm is the only piece of gear that mostly occupies air. The clamp takes about 20×20 cm at the desk edge; everything else happens 60 cm above the surface, swinging in and out of the space between you and your monitor. That is why it is worth drawing, and why a desk stand is usually the wrong choice.
Boom arm or desk stand
A desk stand is simpler but plants a ~20 cm base permanently in front of you and picks up every keystroke through the desk. A clamp-on arm gives that space back, decouples the mic from desk thumps, and swings away when you are not talking. The trade is a clamp that needs a free desk edge, typically 2–4 cm thick, unobstructed by a drawer or a monitor arm.
Where the mic should end up
Roughly a fist’s distance from your mouth and slightly off-axis — above and to one side, angled down — so plosives pass by rather than into the capsule. Coming in from the side keeps the mic out of your camera frame and out of the monitor’s line. On the grid, place the clamp at the back or side edge and check the arm’s reach lands where you actually sit.
What it collides with
Two collisions come up again and again: the arm sharing a desk edge with a monitor arm’s clamp, and the mic hovering in front of the screen once it is swung in.
